Arrive
in Ocean City, check into your hotel and enjoy a welcome reception.
Dine at any of our fine restaurants with free time to explore
Ocean City. Take a walk downtown to see the former "Henry's
Colored Hotel," one of the oldest hotels in Ocean City
patronized by African Americans during the days of segregation.
Experience
the history of the African American culture on the Eastern
Shore with a tour of Bucktown, birthplace of Harriet Tubman.
You will visit various sites from Tubman's childhood, youth
and adulthood. Learn how she developed her skills and characterm
which contributed to her success on the Underground Railroad.
Plan ahead for a boxed lunch along the way. Spend the evening
at Harrington Raceway for dinner and try your luck!
Today,
you'll start with a trip to Berlin to see the Patrick Henry
Art Gallery and a variety of work from local artisans, and
then on to Berlin's Multi-Purpose Center for a tour featuring
information on local African Americans who have local, state
and national prominence.
Enjoy
a lunch on your own at any of Berlin's wonderful eateries,
and then it's off to Pocomoke City. The Sturgis One Room School
Museum in Pocomoke City is the only African American one-room
school house in Worcester County retaining its originial integrity.
On the
way back to Ocean City, stop in Snow Hill for a tour of the
Julia A Purnell Museum, whose exhibits include memorabilia
of Judy Johnson, a local Negro League baseball player. Dine
at one of the many fabulous restaurants in Ocean City.
Depart
for home with a stop in Salisbury and a visit to the Charles
Chipman Cultural Center, Delmarva's oldest standing African
American church.
